The river side
Riverfront homes stay damp on the water side. Docks, seawall caps, screens and the back of the house show it first.
Original masonry and tile
Older stucco, brick and clay tile can last generations when they are kept and not damaged.
Oak canopy
Old oaks shade roofs and walls and fill gutters year-round.
A membership here
Plans here balance the river side of the house with the roof and walls under the trees, with more frequent, lighter visits on the oldest materials.
A house can carry dozens of different materials on the outside, and every one of them is cared for as its own thing, roof to curb, so it looks right not just the day after a visit but in ten, twenty and thirty years. Every visit is photographed and kept in one record of the house, so wear reads as a trend and repairs are caught while they are small.
